About Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park (nearby)

Located on the southeastern side of Unguja Island (Zanzibar), Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park covers a diverse landscape of lowland tropical forest, mangroves, and salt marshes. The park protects one of the last remnants of Zanzibar's indigenous forest and plays a critical role in preserving endemic wildlife, most notably the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, an endangered primate species found exclusively here. Besides the forest, Jozani's mangrove areas provide important nursery habitats for fish and marine life, as well as critical protection against coastal erosion. The park was established in 2004 with the aim of balancing habitat conservation with sustainable tourism and community engagement. Visitors can explore extensive walking trails through the forest where spotting the unique monkeys, various bird species, and other wildlife is common. Guided nature walks offer insights into the park's ecology and the traditional uses of plants by local communities. The nearby Chwaka Bay wetlands support a variety of other fauna and provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching. Jozani also features eco-friendly visitor facilities and a raised boardwalk through the mangroves, allowing an intimate experience with this fragile ecosystem. Its proximity to Zanzibar's main town and beaches makes it an accessible day trip, particularly for those interested in nature, wildlife photography, and environmental education. The park plays a vital role in conserving Zanzibar’s natural heritage while offering a tranquil escape from the island's coastal resorts.
